About us

Before COVID-19, the Starfish Girls – a group of teenage girls who collaborated with Project Starfish, Inc. (PSI) while serving both their local and Indian communities – met on an active basis. However, during the pandemic, it was difficult to hold in-person meetings to work on projects together. Recently, two Starfish Girls who attend the same high school had an idea: why not start a club with similar initiatives?

Founded in August 2021, Starfish Teens of India (SFTI) is a student-led nonprofit organization located at C. Leon King High School in Tampa, Florida. It is open to all King High students who are interested in participating in fundraisers while earning service hours.

Our mission

Partnered with Project Starfish, Inc., Starfish Teens’ mission is to expand from PSI’s collaboration with American Indian health professionals by integrating the next generation in its endeavors: in other words, high school students.

SFTI’s general mission is to collaborate with high school students to provide necessary supplies to children attending RC Middle School.

King High students will not only aid towards fundraising for rural schools in India, but also learn about the conditions there as well as celebrate the Indian culture.

Our goals this year

This year, SFTI aims to:

– Fundraise for RC Middle School by providing necessary materials like masks, hand sanitizer, a printer with xerox, and a large grinder (see specific costs below)

– Participate in an educational event hosted by the Florida Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (FAPI)

– Create Diwali artwork for the children of RC Middle School

– Host a fundraising game night to support PSI’s initiatives

About RC Middle School

This year, SFTI has partnered with RC Middle School, a secular rural school in the mountains of Tamil Nadu. In the past, PSI has provided the students at RC Middle School with cisterns for clean drinking water.

Before the pandemic, there were 130 students attending RC Middle School. During the early pandemic, attendance had dropped to only 42. As the school expects most of its students to return this year, they are in dire need of extra masks and sanitizer.

SFTI is excited to interact with these children and hopes to continue seeing them smile!

Donations

To provide RC Middle School with the items they greatly need, SFTI needs your help. To donate, click on the donate button located on the top right-hand corner of the projectstarfish.org website. Locate the “special instructions to seller” section and type in the keyword “school” for the funding to go towards SFTI’s initiatives. Additionally, type in the name of the SFTI member who guided you towards their fundraising initiative.

Our goal this year is to collect at least $500, or about 38,000 rupees, to cover the costs for the items we would like to donate. If we exceed this amount, we have a “wish list” for other items that would be helpful in maintaining their school, as many of the students reside on campus due to the long commute from their homes.

Here are the approximate costs:

– Masks (bulk): $100

– Hand sanitizer (bulk): $10-15

– Printer: $300 – $350

– Large grinder: $50-75

We thank you for all your help because every dollar counts!
