Part 1 – the Camp
Our first camp (clinic) this November was held at a parish hall in Elankadai. I met with Fr Joseph, who described his community as predominantly Muslim with 100 Catholic families who belong to his parish; most of the children go to local Muslim schools. There are over 25 mosques in the area! The Muslims are primarily shop owners; and the Catholics “sell fish from the sea” at their local market Monday through Saturday from 10 am – 12 pm. More about this later (hint: I love going to markets). We saw approximately 100 patients as there was a competitive cardiology camp! One time several years ago one of our camps had less than 50 attendees as there was a huge wedding in a neighboring village. You just never know!
